Three reasons why it’s important to read God’s word

Three reasons why it’s important to read God’s word

First reason is, it’s crucial to your Christian growth.

God commands us that we must read and study His word so that we may accurately handle the word of truth without being ashamed of it. 2 Tim. 2:15

So not only is reading the Word of God a command but we need to read it so that we can handle the truth accurately which allows all believers to grow as Christians.

In order for any believer to grow, we must long for God’s word, we must want to grow and devour the Word so that we can understand and handle the truth correctly.

1 Peter 2:2 states that we must long for pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.

As newborn babies depend on milk to grow, we too, as Christians, need to depend on God’s Word to grow and the only way to do that is if we long for God’s word and meditate on it, day and night. Psalm 1:2.

Second reason it’s important to read God’s word is because it’s crucial to your spiritual maturity.

We see this in Hebrews 5:11-14. The author of Hebrews is speaking of believers who are not growing because they neglecting their studies in the Word.

When you neglect to read God’s word and study it on your own, you are still drinking milk when you ought to be eating solid food. Without reading and studying God’s word, you will not grow and you will not mature in your Christian faith.

To keep maturing as believers in Christ, we need to study and apply our daily devotions to our everyday lives.

If that is our want, studying/reading the bible, then God promises us that we will mature, no longer needing milk, but we will be partaking the solid food.

Lastly, the third reason is Christian effectiveness.

We find this in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

So that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

If we, believers, are not reading God’s word, how can we be adequate and equipped for good works?

The only way we can be adequate and equipped for good works is by studying the bible. Without reading the Word, we will never know what God’s word has to teach us. If we don’t know what God has to teach us, then how we can fix our sinful lives and how are we to know God’s will for us?

If believers want to be used by God and be effective, we need to study diligently and apply what God has taught us into our lives so that we can go out into this word, evangelizing, baptizing and teaching His people to know Christ.
